Musco Family Olive Company Construction Project Management
Musco Family Olive Company retained Terraphase as project manager and Engineer of Record to manage the design and installation of five replacement surface impoundments in Northern California. Terraphase was also responsible for remediation and compliance activities to achieve clean closure of the one surface impoundment to be decommissioned.
Scope of Services
Terraphase managed the engineering design (consisting of Terraphase and subconsultant engineers) and construction procurement (including managing the bid process). We performed the full suite of management and oversight services during replacement impoundment construction, including contractor oversight, contract management, construction quality assurance (CQA) services, and health and safety management.
Notable Accomplishments
- Engineer of Record
- Performed full suite of management and oversight services, including contractor oversight, contract management, CQA services, and health and safety management
Skagit County Road Repair
Following a major landslide triggered by heavy rainfall, Skagit County closed a section of Prevedal Road and established a temporary bypass in Washington state. Terraphase was retained on an emergency basis and mobilized to the site the morning after the initial phone call. The project required immediate geotechnical evaluation and stabilization design to restore access before the next wet season. The repair effort was jointly funded by the City of Lyman and Washington State Department of Transportation.
Scope of Services
Terraphase provided geotechnical consulting throughout the 30-, 90-, and 100-percent design phases to characterize the landslide and site conditions, identified factors that likely contributed to the slide, and presented potential stabilization and road repair solutions. Our team mapped the slide area and identified the root causes of the slope failure, which were the steep native slope, prior placement of uncontrolled fill to build the roadway, and poor existing surface drainage.
Notable Accomplishments
- Rapid emergency response with next-day on-site mobilization
- Full geotechnical support through all design phases
- Designed a reinforced soil wall solution tailored to site constraints
- Delivered a cost-effective, constructible design that enabled timely road restoration
Northern California Utility Stormwater Management Design
Terraphase led the design of drainage improvements and stormwater sedimentation basins for a Northern California utility district. The location of the work was a receiving yard for soil generated during construction and maintenance projects and is permitted under the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Construction General Permit (CGP).
Scope of Services
Terraphase led the engineering design of drainage improvements across the entire stockpile site to accommodate planned upgrades and long-term expansion.
Terraphase completed hydrological analyses of the stockpile site to develop drainage areas and estimate run-off quantities. These analyses supported the design of two new sedimentation basins (totaling over 100,000 cubic feet of capacity) and their tributary drainage channels for detention and sediment reduction of all run-off prior to discharge to the surrounding open space areas. The design was delivered in a design-build approach working collaboratively with the utility district and the earthwork contractor.
Notable Accomplishments
- Collaborated with the utility district and its earthwork contractor to design and construct the drainage improvements before the rainy season
- Met the utility’s operational and compliance requirements
- Incorporated access improvements requested by stakeholders, including utility district operations and maintenance staff, contractors, and rangers for the adjacent park area
