TerraTalk: Hands-on Soil Logging

As part of Terraphase’s on-going commitment to professional development, Chris Alger, PG, CHG, CEG, hosted a Hands-on Soil Logging course in St. Helena, CA on March 11, 2017.

Using a wide range of calibrated samples, Chris led staff through the process of identifying soil characteristics.  Particular emphasis was placed on estimating percentages of fine sand in mixed soils, soil plasticity characteristics, and simple tools to speed the identification and classification process while logging.  This hands-on workshop approach is considered critical for all consulting firms like Terraphase to assure that standards are maintained and skills are tested and validated by all staff involved with investigations.
